爆心地から七四〇メートルのところで被爆したユーカリです。
炎から逃れるようにのたうつ枝、焼け焦げた跡が残るえぐれた幹。真っ直ぐに伸びていくはずのユーカリの悲惨な姿は木がどれほど苦しんだかを物語っています。
原爆が落ちた地には七五年間、草も木も生えないといわれていました。しかし翌年の春、灼かれ倒れた木々から芽が出て、人々の生きる希望になりました。
『はだしのゲン』シリーズの漫画家、中沢啓治氏がこの木をモデルに作品『ユーカリの木の下で』（汐文社刊）を書いています。被爆した過去を隠し続けた父と子のユーカリを巡る家族の物語。ぜひ読んでみてください。

【ユーカリ】
シンボル「癒し」。常緑高木。オーストラリアでは聖なる樹。先住民族アボリジニは葉をキズ薬にしたり煎じて飲むなど、心身を癒す力を秘めた木としても崇拝しました。深く根を張り、水を吸い上げる性質を利用し、現代では砂漠の緑化にも役立っています。

The eucalyptus is standing in near the place from the hypocenter.The tree revives many times from the blazing heat of the atomic bomb and the typhoons. So when people saw new buds sprouting,they were encouraged and were able to have hope for their future.
