【木の特ちょう―原爆の傷あとが見られない】
焦土と化したヒロシマで、翌年の春、再び芽を吹き返し、今も生き続けるムクノキ。白神社の前、旧・国泰寺（こくだいじ。現在ここにはない）の愛宕池（あたごいけ）跡にあります。原爆によって、幹や枝など地上部分はすべて消失しました。土の中で、根がいのちの力を残していたのでしょう。ほとんど消えた地面の下から芽吹いたため、幹や枝に被爆による傷あとは見られません。2015年５月撮影
【被爆を伝える】
１６０１（慶長６）年に建立された国泰寺境内の愛宕池跡。寺は全焼全壊し、己斐に移転しました。行くとわかりますが、大きな岩がごろごろあります。かつて、この辺りは海岸線に位置し、岩礁を利用して池が造られたからです。木々はすべて焼失しましたが、翌春に芽生えた、カキ（実もなる！）、クロガネモチ、センダンなどが今も元気に成長しています。

白神社前、平和大通りに面した場所に、木が立ち並び、小さな公園のようになっているのが「愛宕池」跡。解説板のほうから愛宕池に入ると、ムクノキが2本、少し離れて3本目が並んでいます。平和記念資料館から徒歩約８分。

【木の特ちょう―骸骨の目から涙が・・・】
原爆によって、幹や枝など地上部分はすべて消失しました。大地から芽を吹き返したため、被爆した木の特徴である「洞（うろ）」や「ヤケドのあと」は見当たりません。しかし、樹皮には、顔に似たような傷、のたうつような幹肌が刻まれています。このクロガネモチの樹皮、黒い目から涙が流れているように見えませんか？（前回の投稿写真）木は、無言で、原爆の恐ろしさを訴えているかのようです。2008年８月撮影

白神社（しらかみしゃ）の前、１６０１（慶長６）年に建立された国泰寺境内の愛宕池跡。かつてこの辺りは海岸線に位置し、岩礁を利用して造られた庭園でした。緑豊かな鎮守の森が広がっていましたが、原爆投下によって、辺り一面が焼け野原になりました。大地から芽を吹き返したのは12本です。この木のほか、カキ、センダン、ムクノキ。

原爆ドームから徒歩約10分。白神社を過ぎ、ANAクラウンプラザホテル広島のちょうど前、平和大通りに面した場所に小さな公園のようになっているのが「愛宕池」跡。池を取り囲むように4本のクロガネモチが立っています。

№7 広島城のユーカリ Eucalyptus in Hiroshima
何度倒れても芽を出す
不屈のユーカリ

爆心地から七四〇メートルのところで被爆したユーカリです。
炎から逃れるようにのたうつ枝、焼け焦げた跡が残るえぐれた幹。真っ直ぐに伸びていくはずのユーカリの悲惨な姿は木がどれほど苦しんだかを物語っています。
原爆が落ちた地には七五年間、草も木も生えないといわれていました。しかし翌年の春、灼かれ倒れた木々から芽が出て、人々の生きる希望になりました。
『はだしのゲン』シリーズの漫画家、中沢啓治氏がこの木をモデルに作品『ユーカリの木の下で』（汐文社刊）を書いています。被爆した過去を隠し続けた父と子のユーカリを巡る家族の物語。ぜひ読んでみてください。
私たちも何度倒れても、新しい芽を出すことができる、と信じられる「The Bombed Tree」です。

【ユーカリ】
シンボル「癒し」。常緑高木。オーストラリアでは聖なる樹。先住民族アボリジニは葉をキズ薬にしたり煎じて飲むなど、心身を癒す力を秘めた木としても崇拝しました。深く根を張り、水を吸い上げる性質を利用し、現代では砂漠の緑化にも役立っています。

The eucalyptus is standing in near the place from the hypocenter.The tree revives many times from the blazing heat of the atomic bomb and the typhoons. So when people saw new buds sprouting,they were encouraged and were able to have hope for their future.

広島城の二の丸跡、お堀のそばに立っているマルバヤナギ。細長い葉をしたシダレヤナギと違い、葉が丸いことからこの名前がつけられています。原爆投下後、幹の中が燃え尽きたのか、樹皮だけを残し、内側は空洞になりました。樹木医によって治療が施され、現在まで元気に育っています。このヤナギ、根は平地に張っているのだが、幹を傾け、枝の一部をお堀の石塀から身をのり出さんばかりにしています。その姿を見ていると、想像を絶するほどの熱い熱線を浴び、どれほど水を欲したか、どれほど喉が渇いたことでしょうか？ 葉の色が暗いせいか、このマルバヤナギは他の被爆樹に比べても、悲しみをずっしりと背負い続けているように見えます。孤独に立つ木の心が伝わってきて、切なくなるのは私だけでしょうか。訪れた夏、赤い小さな芽が出ていたことが救いでした。木々の芽吹きによって、ほんの小さな一歩でも未来の希望を感じた、当時の人々を思いました。

This willow is standing in very close from the hypocenter.Because Hiroshima was burned by the atomic bomb,the inside of the stem of willow became cavity.And yet the tree is standing steadily on the same place.70 years ago, it had been rumored that"nothing will grow in Hiroshima for 75 years".So when people saw new buds sprouting,they were encouraged and were able to have hope for their future.
